Happy Birthday Pancakes | Pet Pen Pals

Yesterday was another birthday for Roux & me. Can you believe it? It has been eight years since we came into mom & dad’s life and well, pretty much overtook it. Yes, we own them but shhhhh, don’t let them know. They like to think they own us. We let them have their pipe dream!

Anyway mom and dad took us on a long walk in the subdivision this morning and then when we returned, mom made us birthday pancakes. Woof woof! Yeah.

There are certain sounds we know and these are what we heard this morning to indicate pancakes. The sounds of a mixer and the clank of the griddle being placed on the counter. The tick, tick of the griddle as it is heating up. SMACK! Oh, sorry, that was an involuntary smack as I recount the fun and anticipation form this morning.

Anyway, so there was a little mishap with the pancake batter dispenser. It kind of fell off the counter and well…. we like pancake batter when it’s cooked or not. Roux wasn’t as lucky as I was because she was splattered with the toppling dispenser.

While mom and dad were busy on clean up duty, we cleaned up the floor where most of the batter fell. It also went on the counter, the refrigerator, etc. We told them not to worry, we had the floor and were “handling it.”

Clean up done, mom put on the cakes. Sniff, sniff, sniff. Can you smell the cakes? Mmmmmmm, we were in heaven waiting for the cakes to cook. Oooo, I can hear them sizzle. Well, not really but it makes for a good story doesn’t it? So finally, they were done and mom let them cool enough so we could have them.

Happy Birthday Boudreaux!

Bellies full we decided to take a nap. Long walks and pancakes are such a nice way to spend a Saturday morning.

Woof woof!

5 Reasons Why I Like The Country | Pet Pen Pals

Ah, smell that? Well I do. Thousands of them. I’m talking about smells of the country.

We’re spending a few days in the country getting back to our roots. No, not Roux and me. Mom and dad. Actually mostly mom. She grew up in the country and most of her family still live here. Yesterday, we spent Thanksgiving with her 92 year old grandmother and most of her immediate family.

After lunch we took a walk in the pastures. Sniff, Sniff, Sniff, Sniff, Ah, Sniff, Sniff, Sniff… that pretty much sums up the walk. Oh, except when Roux tried to roll in a cow pattie! Mom wouldn’t let Roux roll in it so we could “savor the flavor” later. She wouldn’t even let us rustle us some cattle over in the back pasture. Spoil sport she was.

After our walk we came upon some of the family playing football in the back yard. Dad was snapping pictures of the fun so we took a rest by a tree and watched. A little while later he focused the camera our way. He compiled a quick video of the pictures. Have a look. Let us know what you think. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, the 5 reasons I like the country:

Doggy Flu?! Who knew!?

So, Boudreaux and I just went in for our yearly check-ups with Dr. Shawhan at Jersey Village Animal Hospital.  http://www.jvah.com/aboutUs.html Our most favorite part of the visit is getting out of the car and sniffing out all the other animals who have gone before us (who are we kidding, our most favorite part is leaving!!).   We don’t particularly like going inside because, although, the vet techs give us treats, other not-so-nice activities happen, too, like taking our temperature with a probe stuck in our you-know-whats.   We were given a clean bill of health.  We were both at the proper weight, heartworm clear, and bloodwork normal for seven year old Basenjis.  But, because mom & dad may want to go on a vaction without us later in the year (why they would want to do that is beyond me), we had to be made “boarding-ready” by getting a new vaccine for, who knew, the doggy flu.  Doggy flu (aka H3N8 influenza) jumped species from equine to canine and now we dogs can spread it to each other in boarding kennels. See more about the flu here http://www.cdc.gov/flu/canine/ Now, could this vaccine be one of those painless nose squirts?? No it had to be another shot, and not just one shot but two.  Barooooo!!! Ouchie!!!  Dad took some photos of us getting stuck in our rumps.  We don’t look too happy but we are glad to play our part in stopping the spread of doggy flu.

We're curious about the pug behind the counter.

Mom, you tricked me. This was not just going for a ride.

Whoa! Boudreaux shoulda got his treat first. This really hurts!

Happy Birthday To Us

Whew! How did we get to be middle aged dogs this quickly? Seven years today we were born. Yep, I know we don’t look a day over six right? We hear that a lot. Anyway, it has been a fun time owning Kevin & Amy. They have been good to us. Of course, to hear the story of how mom picked us out when we were but wee fur balls is a fun story. Maybe she will tell you about it sometime. She likes that story.

Today was fun. As usual, we relaxed and took long naps during the day. Then when it was time, we got to take a birthday stroll around the neighborhood. It was pretty chilly for mom & dad but we like it just on this side of frisky. Makes for a great walk. Walking quickly to see every bush, tree, and pole.. and of course marking all of these, this is just what a Basenji lives for.

After our walk, mom made us some cookies for our birthday. Well sort of… you see she made some chocolate chip cookies and chocolate is not good for dogs. But we did get to lick the cookie dough remnants. Now that is good eatin’ I tell ya. A little toss and catch rounded out the evening and then off to bed. Yeah, we let mom & dad sleep in our bed. It’s a big one so we can all fit. Dad couldn’t resist to catch us in our snoozing for a birthday picture. Enjoy.

Woof!

The Beach is NOT for Basenjis

If you’ve read Boudreaux’s post (if not, scroll on down) about how “great” the beach was in Surfside, Texas, you have to realize that it is pure propaganda. The beach is not for basenjis! Basenjis are from Africa where there is heat but not all that water, especially water that smells funny. I didn’t like the icky wet sand either; not only was it hot to walk on (we are in Texas in the middle of August), it got all stuck up in my foot pads making it necessary to step in the stinky water just to get it off. Yuck! Besides that, there is no grass at the beach. I had to go potty while there and could not find a proper spot for such delicate business. I ended up pottying in some kind of dune bush that only resembled grass in that it was green.

We walked a little way down the beach and Mom kept encouraging me to get in that stinky water. I whined and whined and kept pulling to get back in the truck. Mom finally gave in and let me go back. I really do not understand why you humans like the beach. Give me my grass-filled back yard and my dry, warm snuggle ball in my air conditioned home and I’m in basenji heaven.

Ah, the feel of grass! No sand in sight!
